Trine 3: The Artifacts Of Power [VERIFIED]

As in Trine 2, the Trine artifact summons Amadeus the wizard, Pontius the knight and Zoya the thief from across the realm for a quest, this time defending the Astral Academy. While the artifact gives the trio the power of immortality, they are tired of being bound this way, and decide to return the power to the Trine in return for their freedom. Their plan fails, though, and the artifact shatters, releasing an evil spirit known as Sarek, who rushes to the Academy.

Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power

The trio ventures into the Academy and learn from the spirit of the Trine that Sarek was a powerful wizard who became invincible by sealing his heart away; in doing so he became insane. Since no one could locate his heart, the only alternative to stopping him was binding his body. Two sisters did battle with him; they were successful but died in the process, creating the three artifacts of power (previously seen in the first Trine): one of the sisters, known as Trine, had her spirit encased in the artifact of soul, the other in the artifact of mind, and Sarek himself in the artifact of body. The two sisters were able to use the combined powers of the two artifacts to keep Sarek subdued, until the Trine was damaged.

The Trine is willing to take back the power she granted the heroes and release them if they collect all her shards and repair her, then find and destroy Sarek's heart. The trio agrees and finds one such shard. Meanwhile, Sarek has managed to locate the artifact of mind within the Astral Academy and corrupt the spirit of Trine's sister. The game then ends and the story is left incomplete. An easter egg in Trine 4 reveals they were indeed able to restore the Trine and defeat Sarek.

I have said it countless times. Trine 1 and 2 are fantastic games and trine 3 is an unfinished turd. The dev team decided to go for a bad 3D gameplay instead the great 2D they had and underestimated the cost of 3D game development. They ended up releasing it unfinished when they ran out of money and gave the finger to everyone who bought it.

At least Ari Pulkkinen has come around to score another charming soundtrack, which complements the universe with a cheery, whimsical tone, and Terry Wilton is so charismatic when he provides exposition with his grandfatherly voice. Speaking of exposition, the narrative itself takes place after the heroes defeated Rosabel and saved her sister Isabel from imprisonment. With yet another adventure on their hands this time, they decide to give back their powers to the Trine artifact in an attempt to stop having their lives interrupted by it summoning them. In attempting to do this, Trine shattered and unleashed the enclosed soul of an ancient evil that had been kept in check by two other good souls inside. Now the heroes must attempt to imprison or defeat this villain once more and repair Trine.

Minor changes to the gameplay come with this extra dimension. Zoya can now tie her rope-arrows to special rings found around the environment, and this produces a tether to hold objects in place. Amadeus can levitate objects into the background, which might allow the destruction of an unstable wall to reveal a secret room. All heroes now grab ledges, which makes the platforming more fluent in some cases. Our heroes are also pushed to explore the extra dimension, so they can later avoid flaming boulders or collect those obscure trineangles. The third dimension plays an important role, but the sequel retains the core design of the series.
